The Image of Women in Literature of the Harlem Renaissance

This text examines the images of women during the Harlem Renaissance in literature written both by and about women. In this regard, literature written by men which is significant in profiling the characteristics, personalities, and psychologies of women during this period is reviewed as well as literature written by women writers during this period. To provide a full portrait to the reader, the author chose to examine a cross section of the literary forms, including drama, poetry, and fiction, and it may be surprising to the reader how militant on the one hand and compromising on the other some of this literature appears to be.
